The new president of the Massachusetts Association of Real Estate Boards spent several of the Depression Years as a police officer, pounding a beat. In 1933, Doherty became a science teacher at Andover High School, along with duties as assistant baseball and football coach, until he joined the Navy for 62 months in 1942. 1948 found Joe principal of Canton High School in Conn., and in 1951, he became superintendent of schools in East Hampton. “My father was a builder many years ago, and in the early ‘30s my brother started the Doherty Agency. In July of 1956, because of the activity of the firm, my brothers enticed me to enter the business and it is obvious by my activities, I have never regretted the move.” He served as Dean of the Mass. Realtors’ Institute last fall and is a former two-term president of the Greater Lawrence Board, along with being a past Realtor of the Year. Joe is married with five offspring and a son at Boston College. He is president of the firm which covers all aspects of the field and includes on its staff his three brothers.
