Name: William Dunfey - 1966

Title: Founder

Company: Dunfey Real Estate & Insurance Division

Location: Hampton, NH

Birthplace: Lowell, MA – 1925

Education: High School; Miami University; University of N.H. (BA – Economics – 1950); University of N.H. (MA – Political Science – 1954) Member: Portsmouth Board of Realtors (Chairman Membership Committee); NHARED; NAREB; International Association of Real Estate Boards (Tel Aviv Convention – 1964); Democratic National Comm. of N.H. (Chairman); Dunfey Family Hotels and Motor Inns (Vice President); and many other civic, business, and political offices. Bill opened Dunfey Real Estate Agency with his brother, Bob, in 1950, where they rented and sold small cottages. It didn’t take long for the brothers to sell seacoast commercial properties. In fact, it was in the university town of Durham, N.H., that Bill invested in buying a student restaurant. “From there we naturally drifted in the hotel and motor inn field. The first one being Lamie’s Tavern & Motor Inn in Hampton. Then we bought the Carpenter Motor Hotel, a franchise from Sheraton in 1959, and in 1962, the Sheraton Eastland in Portland, ME. A year later, we built the Sheraton Wayfarer Motor in Manchester, NH, and just last year, we bought the Sheraton Meadowbrook in Portland.” With his brothers, Jack, Bob, Walter and Jerry, Bill hopes to double the scope and size of his present holdings within the next three or four years. “Basically, the Northern New England economy is healthy and expanding. We’ve been fortunate to get in on it,” Bill said. Aside from his investments, Bill carries on a thriving brokerage business which will rest upon the advantages of the referral system. “We are beginning to prepare for close affiliation with MLS and brokers in the Seacoast Area. The referral system, as in the hotel business, will become a lifetime in real estate brokerage,” he predicted.
