February 21, 2020 - Connecticut

Michelle Carlson, PE, Director of Land Development, Principal at BL Companies

How many years have you been in your current field? 32 years

Which project, deal, or transaction was the “game changer” in the advancement of your career during the last 10 years? Accepting a position at BL Companies was a game changer for my career. As a leader at BL, I am challenged on a daily basis to get out of my comfort zone and have a significant impact on the success and growth of the company and our employee owners. I am a part of a progressive team and am able to mentor and help advance the careers of great people. I have learned so much at BL and been able to apply what I have learned throughout my career to advance to my current position.

What would you tell a young woman about entering this profession? It is an exciting, rewarding profession with endless opportunities. Work hard, be a team player, don’t be afraid to ask questions, listen and don’t stop learning and challenging yourself.

What are you planning to do differently in 2020 to have a positive impact on your career? To not only have a positive impact on my career but that of my team, I am going to find more time to teach, mentor and advance the growth of others in the industry.

Why or/ How did you decide on the A/E/C industry? I was good in math and science and loved chemistry. My guidance counselor and mom suggested I major in Chemical Engineering. I spent 2 years in the Chemical Engineering program at Tufts University and took a wastewater and water treatment plant design class and loved both. They were both Civil Engineering electives, so I switched my major to Civil Engineering. I wanted to get my Professional Engineering license, so I knew it was important to work in the A/E/C Consulting industry to get the necessary design experience to start.
