What was your greatest professional achievement or most notable project in the last 12 months?

One professional achievement that will always stand out for me is the SGA-designed AutoDesk BUILD Space. To accomplish this, my team beta tested BIM360 and digitally fabricated design elements for the office space to showcase the concepts and work done within. Being a part of the inaugural class of designers to implement BIM360 and in the context of delivering this one of a kind maker-space to support the broader A/E/C industry was certainly a ‘once in a lifetime’ project experience–a sentiment shared by SGA Founding Partner: Jeff Tompkins.

What has been the driving force behind your success in the AEC industry? 

Forever crediting my dynamic experience at Wentworth Institute of Technology – which included a co-op equipping me with market ready professional experience – as not only the catalyst for my entry into the industry; but for providing me with skill sets that have inspired a lifelong learning mentality and empowered me to consistently improve the design work I deliver. Beyond this, I must credit a firm that has supported my personal and professional growth from intern to licensed professional, and ultimately director, interior design and senior associate. My leadership and colleagues at SGA have consistently pushed me to tackle complex challenges and unique opportunities.

What is your favorite / most beneficial part of Women in Construction week? While my female colleagues, clients, and collaborators inspire me in a variety of ways throughout the year, Women in Construction week is particularly exciting as it highlights how diverse and dynamic our field can be. It reminds those of us in the A/E/C industry that we are all able to accomplish great things, while showing those who may not have traditionally considered a role in the field that there is a place for everyone at the table. Women in Construction week celebrates the work we have done, and fuels us to tackle the work that’s left to do.

Who or what inspired you to join the AEC industry? Seven-year-old Amanda Vicari knew she would be an Interior Designer. While the intricacies of my passions would evolve, something I know many colleagues will relate to is the binder full of designs wildly reimagining my childhood bedroom. With a father who worked in residential construction and did carpentry at home on the side, my love for design was enthusiastically fostered. When I entered college, my interests had honed in on the commercial space. These days, I fulfill this inner child by diving deep into my own home renovations and reflect on the love for this industry my father helped instill. 

What are your goals for the future? Grateful to have found a community that fosters my personal and professional growth, I am eager to expand my career with SGA and grow our practice. Focused on the professional development of those around me, I am eager to make space for junior designers to have the same opportunities that have been presented to me. Additionally, I am eager to enhance the ways in which I give back to our community by seeking opportunities to meaningfully engage the next generation of design talent a passion realized through serving two years on the IIDA NE Board as VP of Student Affairs.
