Abbot Building restores portion of New Hope Baptist Church tower

Abbot Building Restoration Company, Inc. completed restoration of a portion of the tower at the New Hope Baptist Church on Tremont St. As part of a renovation, Abbot was contracted to investigate and resolve a severe leakage problem within the tower. In the course of the repairs, Abbot restored the stained glass windows on the first floor of the left face of the tower, as well as all of the wood windows above being careful to maintain the historic integrity of the building. In addition, Abbot removed all of the mortar joints and repointed the entire left face of the tower. In the rear of the tower, Abbot removed all of the mortar joints and repointed the area of the tower that was causing leakage of water into a stairwell. Abbot also restored all of the windows in that section. Founded in 1938 at a location not far from where it currently is located, the New Hope Baptist Church is part of Boston's South End historic community. In 1968, the congregation purchased and remodeled its current home - the Tremont St. Methodist Church building - located at the corners of West Concord and Tremont Sts. Constructed in 1862, the building was designed by Charles Howland Hammatt Billings in the traditional Gothic Style. This was the first church in the Boston area to be built of Roxbury 'puddingstone', a building material in the mid-nineteenth century for religious buildings.
