Backman named principal of Harriman

Daniel Backman

Auburn, ME Daniel Backman, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, has been named a principal of Harriman, a Maine-based architecture and engineering firm with offices throughout New England.

With nearly two decades of architectural experience on college and university campuses in California and across New England, Backman has built his career on a deep-rooted passion for designing vibrant spaces that stimulate creativity, collaboration, and student success. Since joining Harriman in 2021, Backman has played a key role in shaping the firm’s higher education portfolio.

“Daniel has a gift for bringing people together around big ideas,” said Mark Lee, AIA, LEED AP  Harriman CEO. “He helps clients and teams navigate complex challenges with clarity and imagination, and his influence is already shaping the future of our practice.”

Backman joins principals Lee, James Fortin, PE; Lisa Sawin, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C; David Story, PE, LEED AP; and Mark Burnes, AIA, NCARB on the Harriman ownership team.
