BOMA Engineering Committee hosts fire safety discussion Sept. 12

Boston, MA On September 12, the BOMA Boston Engineering Committee hosted a discussion with lt. Paul Fitzpatrick with the Boston Fire Department on construction fire safety and prevention plans. A focus of the conversation was on the NFPA241 and the following items: 

• What the Boston Construction Safety Unit is and what they do; 

• Changes and requirements of the NFPA241; 

• Project specific vs. building specific requirements; and

• Hot work standards and NFPA25. 

An important discussion on Cyber Security, hosted by the BOMA Preparedness Committee, was held on October 2. Attendee take-aways included: How to protect yourself, your company, and your resources from cyber threats. James Whalen, senior vice president, chief information officer at Boston Properties, provided a primer on cyber security and commercial real estate. The session discussed how to approach the protection of property assets and building systems in today's ever-changing threat environment.

Fallfest, one of BOMA Boston’s signature annual events with close to 300 in attendance, was held on October 4 at Explorateur Restaurant in downtown. Guests enjoyed a fun evening of connection, conversation, and conviviality! Fallfest is sponsored by BOMA’s Affiliate Service Provider members. 

On October 18, the BOMA Boston Emerging Professionals will be hosting a Behind the Scenes tour of the Innovative Design Building in the city’s Seaport district. The tour will take place from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. The Innovation Design Building is a new hub for ideas, technology, art, and entrepreneurship. The space now features office space for local businesses of all sizes, tasty food vendors, retail spaces, design showrooms, and much more. Join leaders from Jamestown who will guide attendees through the space, show off their favorite areas of the building and provide some information on both the history and the future of the building. Following the tour, attendees are welcome to head over to Tony C’s Sports Bar and Grille for networking, appetizers, and beverages. 

Each year, the TOBY (Outstanding Building of The Year) & Industry Awards recognize the best and brightest in property management, building operations and service in the real estate industry. There are 17 categories for TOBY Awards, and 10 categories for the Industry Awards. Since the TOBYs are nationally recognized, the local winners move on to regional competition, and hopefully, International competition. This year’s BOMA Boston TOBY & Industry Awards event will be taking place on Wednesday, November 14 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place Hotel.

BOMA’s partnership with BOMI International remains strong with nine courses scheduled for 2018 in the city. With the educational offerings, BOMA members and non-members learn from senior professionals in the commercial real estate industry to work towards earning their RPA or FMA designations, or PAC or PMFP certifications. Next up in the series will be a four-day Environmental Health and Safety Issues course running from November 6-14 at the BOMA offices. The course will be instructed by Barry Familetto with Stetson Management & Development Company.
