Company of the Month: Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc.:
45 years of building a legacy together

July 28, 2023 - Front Section

Holliston, MA In July of 1978, Wayne Griffin opened the doors to his own electrical subcontracting business in Holliston. Fast forward 45 years and Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. (Griffin Electric) has evolved from modest beginnings into one of the top electrical firms in the country. With thousands of projects to its credit over the past four decades, Griffin Electric serves clients across a range of markets within the state, federal, and private sectors throughout New England and the Southeast and has made a name for itself as an industry leader.

Success does not happen overnight, and it certainly does not come without putting in the work to build a strong team and culture. More than just a motto, Griffin’s “Work with the Best. Be the Best” mentality has guided the company to hire, train, and maintain the best possible workforce and helped shape the company into what it is today. As a firm believer that employing individuals who possess a wide array of skills and have unique experiences will only enrich its team, Griffin Electric has always made it a priority to incorporate people of different backgrounds and perspectives.

This important milestone is truly a reflection of the quality of people that the company has surrounded itself with, from its own dedicated workforce to the solid business relationships it has built and sustained over the years. Each employee, client, vendor, and project partner has played a part in the journey toward reaching 45 years in the construction industry, and without their support and contributions, this accomplishment would not be possible.

The company is extremely proud to have once again earned the #1 ranking as the top electrical contractor in New England by Engineering News-Record (ENR), while each of its regional office locations in Pelham, AL; Doraville, GA; Charlotte, NC; and Raleigh-Durham, NC are also consistently recognized among the best and largest electrical contractors in the Southeast. But even more important than the acknowledgment it has received has been the respect and trust it has earned in the industry over the years through a consistent commitment to deliver projects safely, on time, and within budget.

One of the ways that Griffin Electric has been able to attain this level of consistency and quality craftsmanship is through apprenticeship, which has ensured that it has a highly skilled workforce representing the company on every project. In addition to its 45th anniversary, this year also marks the 30th anniversary of Griffin Electric’s in-house Apprenticeship Training Program.

Since 1993, the company has helped guide apprentices on “the pathway to potential” and prepared many men and women in pursuit of their licensure as they transition into electrician and telecom technician roles. Throughout this four-year program, apprentices undergo both 600 hours of classroom instruction and 8,000 hours of on-the-job learning under the supervision of a licensed journeyperson. Griffin’s program is federally recognized, state approved and fully accredited by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

Training, learning, growth and development goes far beyond the Apprenticeship Training Program at Griffin Electric. Continual education is a central part of Griffin’s culture and employees throughout the company are encouraged to take advantage of every opportunity to better themselves both personally and professionally. Griffin Electric believes that whether someone is a first-year apprentice or a seasoned veteran of the company, there are always new skills to learn or even different ways to approach a task more efficiently. In addition to offering each employee $2,000 of annual tuition reimbursement as well as a mix of voluntary educational resources and courses throughout the year, the company is also proudly partnered with Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston to provide licensed graduates of its Apprenticeship Training Program an opportunity to earn an associate degree.

Promoting this attitude of self-improvement has helped the company to continue to rise above any type of change or challenge it may be faced with. Whether experiencing unique obstacles that arise with individual projects or even industry-wide setbacks, the company can remain confident that it has the type of people in its corner who can overcome anything together.

There is a lot to be grateful for, and the company looks forward to recognizing its 45th anniversary with the entire Griffin team this summer. With a series of summer
outings taking place in each of the company’s five regions, employees and their loved ones will have an opportunity to come together and celebrate the great deal of hard work and dedication they have put forth.
