Eversource partners with Hartford’s Gold Building owner on energy efficiency project

Berlin, CT Tenants of Hartford’s historic “Gold Building” can now enjoy an updated building and lower energy costs thanks to energy efficiency upgrades supported by Eversource. The utility partnered with LS Gold LLC (a joint venture between LAZ Investments and Shelbourne Global Solutions), alongside RM Bradley to make the transformative project a reality.

A team of energy efficiency experts updated close to 3,900 interior and exterior fixtures with high-efficiency LED lights and added additional energy efficiency measures to the building’s existing energy management system.  These improvements follow other energy efficiency improvements over recent years that included chiller and cooling tower upgrades, high efficiency boiler installation, and LED lighting installation throughout the attached eight-story parking garage.  The improvements are expected to save approximately 878,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year or roughly $140,000 in energy costs.

“We’re proud to help bring iconic landmarks such as The Gold Building into the 21st Century with energy efficiency solutions that provide tenants with greater comfort while lowering carbon emissions,” said Eversource vice president of Energy Efficiency Tilak Subrahmanian. “This project will save over 680 tons of carbon emissions per year – the equivalent of taking about 150 cars off the road. This is a significant reduction, and we’re glad we could work with the building owners to deliver such a significant impact.”

“The Gold Building is one of Hartford’s most historic office buildings and has one of the highest occupancy rates in the city,” said Jane Davey, director of acquisitions and asset management at LAZ Investments. “The environmentally sustainable and cost-efficient operation of this facility is one key to its success, which is why we’ve made this significant investment to improve its energy efficiency and will continue with upgrades in the coming years.”

The landmark building spans 621,000 s/f of office space and an attached eight-story parking garage. The property is home to business tenants such as Travelers, Accenture, KPMG, Conning & Co., Virtus Investment Partners, Global Atlantic Financial Group, General Reinsurance, LAZ Parking and People’s United Bank.

Eversource, as a sponsor of Energize Connecticut, provides nationally recognized energy efficiency services and incentives for business and residential customers.
