Facts and milestones of the Institute of Real Estate Management of the National Assn. of Realtors

Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) of the National Association of Realtors was founded in Chicago, Ill. in 1933. Its core purpose is to advance the profession of real estate management while helping real estate managers prosper and add value to their companies and the properties they manage. The membership categories' figures as of January 1st are: *CPM members - 8,642 *CPM candidate members - 3,305 *Accredited residential manager (ARM) member - 3,696 *Accredited commercial manager members - 11 (new as of 10/1/06) *Associate member 2,187 members *Student Member - 213 *Academic Member - 25 *Total individual membership - 18,079 *Accredited management organization (AMO) *Headquarters 507 *Branch offices 589 Assets under IREM member management: $1.5 trillion * Residential units: 9.4 million * Commercial space: 8.4 billion s/f Structure: Led by Governing Council consisting of all current chapter presidents, regional vice presidents, officers, ex officio members and elected membership supported by association management professionals. IREM Historical milestones * 1933 - Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) founded to educate real estate managers and certify their competence and professionalism. * 1943 - First JPM, Journal of Property Management published. * 1936 - First IREM education course presented in Chicago. * 1938 - Certified Property Manager (CPM) designation established. * 1945 - Accredited Management Organization (AMO) accreditation established. * 1947 - First edition of Principles of Real Estate Management published. * 1950 - IREM membership reaches 1,000. * 1972 - Joseph Murray, CPM, receives first J. Wallace Paletou award for devotion to improvement of the real estate management industry. * 1975 - Accredited Residential Manager (ARM) certification established. * 1979 - IREM Foundation established as the Institutes's research and administrative support arm. * 1983 - IREM celebrates 50th Anniversary. * 1986 - International Affiliate program launched. * 1995 - IREM signs first protocol agreement with Russian Guild of Realtors, marking the beginning of the Institutes's expansion outside North America. * 1995 - www.irem.org launches. * 1998 - First IREM international chapter outside of North America is formed in Poland. * 2001 - First Capitol Hill Visit/Leadership and Legislative Conference promotes awareness of industry's legislative concerns. * 2002 - IREM launches associate membership program. * 2005 - IREM launches student and academic membership categories. * 2006 - Accredited Commercial Manager certification established. * 2006 - IREM and the CCIM Institute launched its annual education event "Success Series." * 2007 - IREM launches new single ethics code applicable to all members. * 2007 - IREM recognizes 20,000th recipient of its Certified Property Manager (CPM) designation. * 2008 - IREM holds year-long 75th anniversary celebration.
