One of the goals in 2019 for the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Chapter of the Appraisal Institute is to engage with local colleges and universities to introduce students to a career in real estate appraisal. To that end, the chapter through its Hewitt Scholarship Fund, is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its Real Estate Appraisal Education Scholarship. One scholarship per year will be awarded to a recent college graduate for the four courses required for a trainee license (Basic Appraisal Principles, Basic Appraisal Procedures, 15 Hour National USPAP Course and the Supervisor/Trainee Course) offered by the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Chapter of the Appraisal Institute.

The next opportunity to take the trainee courses starts on May 9. The Appraisal Institute offers a Student Affiliate category. Student Affiliates enjoy discounts on Appraisal Institute publications and courses, access to the Appraisal Institute’s Lum Library as well as affiliation with our local chapter where they can network with appraisal professionals.

Many college graduates who are considering a career in real estate don’t know about the advantages of a real estate appraisal career – which could include a flexible work schedule, the prospect of being your own boss, and the ability to work on a variety of different projects.

The chapter’s next networking opportunity is on Tuesday, May 21st at the Atlantic Wharf in downtown Boston. The program will include lunch and a presentation on casinos and their effect on real estate value. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in a real estate appraisal career to speak directly with seasoned appraisers.

As always, we would like to thank our 2019 chapter sponsors. CB Richard Ellis and Newmark Knight Frank are Platinum Partners. The chapter’s Silver Partners are Cushman and Wakefield, Integra-Boston, and Vision Government Solutions.

For more information about becoming a chapter sponsor, please contact our executive director, Lianne Andreucci at 781-397-8922 or office@massri-appraisalinstitute.org.

Greg Curtis, MAI, is the 2019 president of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Chapter of The Appraisal Institute, and senior vice president, valuation & advisory at Newmark Knight Frank, Boston, Mass.

The focus on price per s/f compared to the comparable sales used in the appraisal report - by Dennis Chanski

Over the past several weeks, I have completed appraisal assignments for private clients. Interestingly, after submitting these appraisals, I received several phone calls – not to question the value, content, or any incorrect information, but rather to discuss the price per s/f compared to the comparable sales used in the report.
