Miriam Hospital - Providence, RI

Miriam Hospital designed by HOK New York in association with S/L/A/M Collaborative, has been named one of four recipients of the 2008 Citation of Merit Award by Healthcare Design magazine. The hospital was selected out of 160 projects entered in the magazine's annual Architectural Review competition this year.
HOK's redesign of the Miriam Hospital includes 123,900 s/f of new construction and 35,945 s/f of renovated space, adding a third floor to the surgical services/radiology building.
"We are extremely pleased that our design of the Miriam Hospital has won this prestigious award, further demonstrating our success in helping healthcare institutions raise their ability to deliver higher standards of quality of care for their patients and promoting more collaborative environments among the clinical employees and staff," said Chuck Siconolfi, director of healthcare planning and design for HOK New York.
The renovation increased the bed capacity; created three new acute care medical/surgical nursing units; significantly increased the number of private rooms; upgraded both bed stock and the Emergency Department (ED); consolidated and upgraded diagnostic and treatment service areas that primarily serve emergency and ambulatory patients; and decompressed a number of key programs that have previously been forced to operate in a space inadequate for the needs of quality patient care.
A 20-member jury selected award winners, which will be featured in the September issue of Healthcare Design.
