EBC NH Chapter Remediation Program: Managing PCB Contaminated Caulking in Older Buildings
Wednesday, November 28, 2012 - 7:30 AM - 12:00PM
Over the past several years, the occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in building materials has been a growing concern for public and private property owners in New England. The approaches used for the management of these materials, however, have been inconsistently applied throughout the industry. This EBC program will focus on issues of PCB-impacted building materials, pertinent regulations, types of waste, assessment techniques, risk characterization, remediation/abatement methods, disposal options, and deed restrictions for remaining impacts. The program will feature the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Region I TSCA PCB coordinator, Kim Tisa, who will provide a review of regulatory developments. In addition presentations will include public/private property owners and an environmental attorney who will share their experiences.

EBC Rhode Island Chapter Program: Renewable Energy at Closed Landfills
Wednesday, November 28, 2012 - 7:30 AM - 12:00PM
Closed landfills tend to be land areas that either cannot be effectively utilized, or have little (or negative) economic, recreation or social value. With the incentives and policies driving renewable energy projects it makes great environmental, energy and economic sense for municipalities to develop renewable energy projects on closed landfills in Rhode Island. Solar or wind developments on landfills in other jurisdictions have proven to be an effective use of closed landfills that benefits municipalities financially, which is especially important given the recent economic troubles facing cities and towns in Rhode Island. Recent legislation to promote long term distributed generation contracts with National Grid have provided a greater incentive to developers to invest in these kinds of projects. This EBC Rhode Island Chapter program will provide speakers and a panel discussion that focuses on the development of closed landfills for renewable energy projects in Rhode Island and New England. Presentations will include the specific requirements for landfill development including dealing with potential impact on landfill caps, landfill gas considerations, environmental impacts and the regulatory process. A panel discussion will be held to discuss issues that include financial incentives, policy initiatives and development potential for these renewable energy projects in Rhode Island. The goal of this workshop will be to provide you with the tools needed to assess the redevelopment potential of closed landfill sites, navigate the permitting process, and harness state renewable energy incentives. There will be ample networking opportunities, with a continental breakfast provided at this landmark setting on the upper Narragansett Bay.
