MED-Ed Facilities Boston, the healthcare and educational facilities design and construction event for New England, April 1-2, 2014 at the Seaport World Trade Center Boston Massachusetts revealed that Mark Kalin, FAIA FCSI LEED will be the conference director for the event. The two day MED-Ed Facilities conference program covers: Affordable Care Act affects on healthcare construction; innovation in healthcare construction; cutting edge educational facilities; maintaining operations during redesign and rebuilding; BIM in healthcare design and construction; building performance & engineering; green construction, specifications; codes & contract documents; project management & delivery; and case studies.
Kalin is president of Kalin Associates, one of the nation's leading independent specification consulting firms. Founded in 1984, Kalin Associates has provided construction specifications for over 2,000 projects nationwide with a total construction value of over $ 15 billion. He is a registered architect, CSI certified construction specifier, and USGBC LEED accredited professional. Kalin is one of only 27 individuals ever advanced to Fellowship in both the American Institute of Architects and the Construction Specifications Institute.
Kalin is a past-president of SCIP, Specifications Consultants in Independent Practice and CSI/Boston. He has been chairman of several AIA Committees, including the Masterspec Review Committee, Library and Archives Committee, and Specifications and Building Technology PIA. For the Boston Society of Architects he has served as Technology Commissioner and vice-chair of the Building Envelope Committee. He is a founding member of the Air Barrier Association of America.
He has taught architectural specifications at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and is currently chair of the Sustainable Facilities Practice Group of the Construction Specifications Institute. He was the long time Conference Director for the highly successful Build Boston conference.
Kalin has a degree in Literature from the University of Rochester and a degree in Architecture from Ohio State University. He is the author of Master Short-Form Specifications, the original AIA Master Outline Specifications, the original GreenSpec, the Architect's Guide to the Massachusetts Energy Code and over 80 published technical articles. Mr. Kalin was the editor for the Details Plus newsletter and is the author of the Chapter on Green Specifications in the 2003 R. S. Means publication on Green Costs and Sustainability. He has received over 30 awards from national and local professional organizations recognizing his proficiency in specifications and contributions to the profession.
Kalin's experience with other firms includes Brown Daltas and Associates formerly in Cambridge, MA and Sasaki Associates, a multi-office, multi-disciplinary design firm, where he was director of information services and developed interdepartmental technical databases. Kalin was also head of specifications for with Jung/Brannen Associates, a 150 person design office in Boston.
