Lange, principal, will retire from Shepley Bulfinch after 26 years

Cathleen Lange

Boston, MA Shepley Bulfinch, a leading national architecture and design firm, today announced the retirement of principal Cathleen Lange, AIA, LEED AP. Since joining the firm in 2000, Lange has helped shape the firm’s healthcare practice while mentoring generations of design professionals.

As a principal, Lange became a defining voice in the firm’s healthcare work and played an instrumental role in bringing several of Shepley Bulfinch’s most significant projects to life. Her portfolio spans inpatient hospitals, outpatient centers, cancer facilities, and mental health environments, all of which have been widely recognized for improving access to care and advancing dignity in healthcare delivery. Major collaborators during her tenure include Yale New Haven Health, Mass General Brigham, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Mount Auburn Hospital, Tufts Medicine, and Boston Children’s Hospital.

“I feel incredibly grateful for my time at Shepley Bulfinch, and the talented people I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside over the past 26 years,” said Lange. “The firm has provided a platform for growth, surrounded by colleagues who have supported and inspired me at every step. As I transition into this next phase, that is what I will miss most. The laughter, the collaboration, and the constant opportunity to learn from those around me.”

Lange’s influence is felt deeply in the next generation of practitioners at the firm, where she has served as a trusted mentor and guide to her peers. Many credit her with shaping not only their understanding of architecture, but also their approach to leadership—how to listen closely, speak thoughtfully, and carry responsibility with integrity.

“Cathy’s impact on Shepley Bulfinch extends far beyond the projects she led,” said Angela Watson, FAIA, LEED AP, President and CEO of Shepley Bulfinch. “Both a colleague and friend, she has helped define our culture through her ability to bring people together, translate complexity into clear solutions, and invest in emerging leaders. Her influence will be felt for years to come.”

The firm extends its gratitude to Cathleen Lange for her decades of leadership, mentorship, and dedication to advancing healthcare design. Her legacy will continue to shape Shepley Bulfinch’s healthcare practice and the designers she has influenced.
