Looking back on some of the highlights of 2nd half of 2013

December 20, 2013 - Connecticut

As we come to the end of 2013 I wanted to take a minute and look back on some of the highlights of the 2nd half of the year.
On July 15th we held our annual golf event at the Country Club of Avon. The Country Club of Avon is a beautiful course and they always treat us well. This year was no exception as a good time was had by all.
On August 8th we held our 3rd event in a brand new concept program, "BOMA After-Dark." These events were designed as a no admission cost, purely social event for BOMA members and prospective members. These events allowed prospective members to come and check BOMA out in a no-pressure situation where they could get to know some of our members and see if BOMA would be something they would be interested in. It is also a nice chance to network with fellow BOMA members at a different time of day from our typical morning programs/ Networking events. We held one event at City Steam and two at Salute, all in downtown. Look for these events to continue in 2014
September 10th brought us "Multi-Dwelling and Business Recycling: Obstacles & opportunities," an informative program about required recycling in CT Business and multi-dwelling buildings. This Program featured Chris Nelson and Carey Hurlburt from the CT DEEP and Marilyn Cruz-Aponte of the City of Hartford.
October 10th was another "new" event for BOMA Greater Hartford. We held the First Ever Greater Hartford BOMA "Best of the Best" awards. At our new event we presented 5 awards to different properties that represented the Best of the Best in various categories. We also presented our annual Member of the Year (Ron Goodin), Corporate Honoree of the Year (Pullman & Comely), Engineer of the Year (Jeffrey Gottier), and Allied Member of the Year (Jennifer Rossi) awards. A great event indeed, but look for TOBY's to return for 2014.
November 19th brought us to a brand new venue for our program. A huge Thank You to Todd Andrews and Goodwin College ,who not only hosted us, but sponsored the breakfast and meeting. We had great presentations from Todd regarding growth in East Hartford, a speech from Ken Leslie about what's happening in Glastonbury, and a look at the future of West Hartford from Robert Rowlson. It was a very interesting meeting at a great new venue.
On December 5th we held our annual Holiday Social at our 3rd different venue over the last 3 years. This year we visited downtown eatery, Peppercorn's Grill on Main St. Once again we held a raffle for people who brought new unwrapped toys to donate to Toys for Tots campaign. We raised a carload (and then some) full of gifts, and of course a Marine was there to represent the fantastic program. A great night of conversation, food, and drink was had by all.
Never one to rest on laurels, we have already developed big plans for 2014. Our programming schedule is just about finalized. We have lined up some great programs including a January program focusing on the State of CT's purchases in Hartford over the last few months. We will have some programs that get us out and about and looking at projects going on in our area. Some of our old favorites will be back, such as our golf events. And also some great educational panels and programs. And with our schedule set this early we have plenty of sponsorship opportunities for the programming this year.
In addition to the great programming we have lined up for 2014, we are also looking at rolling out a brand new educational opportunity from BOMI. The new High Performance Certificate Program is a brand new initiative from BOMI to help bring High Performance Building operation into focus.
So as you can see, we have a big year planned for Greater Hartford BOMA for 2014. We hope you will join us. We can always use help on our committees, and it's a great way to work with and get to know other Greater Hartford BOMA members. Thank you for your continued support.
Wes Nicoll is the president of BOMA Greater Hartford, and is with Griffin Land, Bloomfield, Conn.
