Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, YouthBuild Boston, and the New England Carpenters Training Fund host fall protection event

Roxbury, MA Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, YouthBuild Boston, and the New England Carpenters Training Fund hosted the 2017 Fall Protection Stand-Down. This event took place at an active project site at 31-33 Woodville St., where students from YouthBuild and Madison Park High are building a new two-story home that will be turned over to the city of Boston as newly available affordable housing.
The event coincides with OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down Week, which highlights the importance of fall protection. The training event began with a speaking program – featuring representatives of the City of Boston’s Department of Neighborhood Development, Inspectional Services Department and Public Health Commission; the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards and Board of Building Regulations and Standards; as well as OSHA, YouthBuild Boston and Madison Park Technical Vocational High School. This was followed by four hands-on safety workshops where YouthBuild Boston pre-apprentices and Madison Park students reviewed fall protection standards with top industry professionals.

• Personal Fall Arrest Systems, led by Suffolk regional safety director Martin Leik and Whitecap safety program manager Dan Scimone
• Pump Jack Staging, led by YouthBuild site superintendent Mark Trombley
• Ladder Safety, led by Shawmut Construction carpenter foreman Gary Shaw
• Welded Frame Scaffolding, led by Gilbane Building Co. district safety manager Jim Barnett
The National Safety Stand-Down is held to highlight the importance of fall prevention in the construction industry and OSHA recognizes the importance of providing this training to our up-and-coming youth trainees. Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, YouthBuild Boston, and the New England Carpenters Training Fund are hosting this event because each is committed to helping Boston youth realize opportunities and success in the various building trades and to ensure they receive the most comprehensive safety training possible.
