Maugel DeStefano Architects designs restoration of White Cliffs Mansion

Northborough, MA According to Maugel DeStefano Architects, design is underway for the restoration of the historic White Cliffs Mansion. Developed by Brookfield, CT-based Elegant Banquets, the mansion was originally constructed in 1886 as the summer estate of industrialist Daniel B. Wesson. 

The landmark property is being transformed into a premier wedding and event destination. The project embraces a preservation-driven approach that removes incompatible additions accumulated over decades, restores the mansion’s architectural character, and introduces contemporary amenities that support its long-term vitality. The result will be a venue that celebrates the estate’s rich history while securing its future for generations to come.

The design approach is guided by the National Historic Guidelines, emphasizing transparency and subservient massing. At the heart of the restoration is the removal of substantial 1960s-era additions that obscure the mansion’s historic front façade and diminish its architectural presence. In their place, the original front and side porches will be restored and enclosed with frameless glass, preserving the building’s historic proportions and visual openness while meeting contemporary functional requirements. These transparent interventions create a connection between the mansion’s restored interior spaces and the new additions, allowing the historic architecture to remain the focal point while introducing light-filled gathering spaces that enhance the overall visitor experience.

The new construction, including a cocktail pavilion and grand ballroom, is intentionally distinct in its architectural expression, creating a clear contrast with the Victorian Queen Anne character of the original mansion and avoiding the creation of a false historical narrative. Guided by preservation best practices, the additions feature simplified forms, restrained detailing, and lower rooflines that defer to the scale and prominence of the historic structure. 

Deliberately set back from the primary façade, they preserve key views of the mansion and reinforce its role as the visual and cultural centerpiece of the property. This relationship between old and new allows the architectural elements to coexist in a complementary dialogue, celebrating the site’s evolution while maintaining the integrity of its architectural heritage.

The restoration team includes Lobisser & Ferreira Construction Co. as general contractor, Trillium Engineers providing structural engineering, Hancock Associates leading civil engineering and landscape architecture, and Rich Correia serving as project advisor.
