Walter Johnson III is the northeast region manager of The Abacus Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Walter Heller and Company. He is responsible for complete financial services for the firm’s clients which include commercial and industrial real estate developers, owners and investors and the leading institutional lenders who do business with them. He also represents affiliated companies and subsidiaries In New England and New York. Abacus provides a unique capability among major mortgage banking firms: it handles all layers of debt for real estate transactions, Including land financing, construction and gap loans, joint ventures, long term permanents and second mortgages. The company’s portfolio is diversified among all types of investment property: hotels, retail, industrial, condominium and apartment sites and office buildings. Abacus now serves fifty institutional lenders and has negotiated financing for such properties in forty states. Walter graduated with honors from Clarkson College of Technology in 1958. His first job was with the C.P.A. firm of Coopers & Lybrand in it’s N.Y. office, acting as liaison among the partner, client, audit staff and special service department. He dealt with associates, clients, executives, attorneys and banks. In 1964 Walter became the vice president and director of computer service company and for the next. six years he was the chief financial and administrative officer with a national firm which tripled its sales and profits during that time. In 1970 Walter joined a recently formed bank holding company as its vice president. He established and served as chairman of the loan committee for the wholly owned bank and was a consultant to a major land developer in the structuring and placement of a retail project. He also organized and obtained equity financing for a 120 mile cable television system in which the holding company was a participant and served as president during the two years of its development. ln 1974 Walter associated with a real estate and mortgage subsidiary of a major Connecticut bank. As the president and chief executive officer. his responsibilities included specializing in quality real estate loans secured by first, second and wraparound mortgages, with virtually no charge offs. A resident of Cheshire. Conn., he lives with his wife and four sons. David attends Franklin & Marshall College; Richard is a student at Choate Preparatory School; Mark and Andrew are in grammar school. Walter holds memberships In the American institute of Certified Public Accountants. the Mortgage Bankers As80Ciation and the National Association of Corporate Real Estate Executives. In his spare time he enjoys fishing, skiing and golf.
