Providence, RI Congressman David Cicilline, mayor Jorge Elorza and the West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation joined representatives of Rhode Island Housing today to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Sankofa Apartments development. The Sankofa development features a variety of rental apartments, and will serve as a hub of urban agriculture and community activities in Providence’s West Elmwood neighborhood.

“I’m delighted to join Rhode Island Housing for today’s ribbon-cutting at Sankofa Apartments,” said Congressman David Cicilline. “This project is going to provide safe, affordable housing for 50 Providence families; grow our local economy; and make West Elmwood even stronger. This is exactly how every level of government – federal, state, and local – should work together in order to get things done for the people we serve.”

The Sankofa development was built on nine vacant infill lots located between Elmwood Avenue and Dexter Street and consists of 50 rental homes in 11 buildings. Sankofa Apartments include one, two, three, and four-bedroom apartments. The apartments feature energy-efficient designs and green space.
