According to Shaw's and Star Market, New England's second largest supermarket chain, its new store at Chestnut Hill is the first in the nation to receive GreenChill's Platinum-Level Store Certification Award for green refrigeration technology. GreenChill's Platinum-Level Store Certification is the highest award that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has for supermarket refrigeration.
"The EPA's GreenChill Partnership is very proud to award its first-ever Platinum-Level Store Certification Award in the U.S. to Star Market's Chestnut Hill store. This store sets a new standard for environmental responsibility for others in the industry to work to match," according to Drusilla Hufford, director of EPA's Stratospheric Protection Division.
The brand-new, ozone friendly refrigeration system chills both the low temperature products such as frozen food and ice cream and the medium temperature products such as dairy, meat and produce.
"The Star Market at Chestnut Hill will serve as a pilot prototype for sustainability," said Mike Witynski, president of Shaw's and Star Market. "The Platinum GreenChill award is the ultimate recognition of innovative thinking to create a cutting-edge store that incorporates the latest in green technology."
