Studio G Architects and Heading Home
celebrate ribbon cutting at 37 Wales St. in Boston

Boston, MA Studio G Architects, in partnership with Heading Home, celebrated the ribbon cutting of 37 Wales St. on May 1. The completion of 37 Wales St. marks a significant milestone in Studio G’s commitment to innovative design and community enhancement, bringing affordable, supportive housing to the community of Dorchester.

In collaboration with Heading Home, a nonprofit organization that aims to end homelessness in Greater Boston, 37 Wales St. will provide stable housing and on-site support services for formerly homeless families.

Located on a 10,000 s/f lot on a residential street, the project demolished the existing structure and regraded the site to reflect the street’s natural slope. The new four-story apartment building contains 20 family-sized apartments, first-floor common spaces, and a program manager office for Heading Home’s staff to provide supportive services to residents. All the apartments are targeted to extremely low-income families earning at or below 30% of the Area Median Income, a top housing priority for the city and state.

“Studio G is proud to unveil 37 Wales St. in partnership with Heading Home to help reach our goal of ending homelessness in the Greater Boston area,” said Gabriela Shelburne, principal at Studio G Architects. “Part of our core mission at Studio G is to positively contribute to the community by creating spaces where people can feel comfortable and at home.”

Studio G designed the building to meet Passive House and LEED Silver standards. The high-performance building envelope and all-electric HVAC design showcases Studio G’s commitment to sustainable design practices. The near Net Zero Energy Building received Executive Office of Housing & Livable Communities (EOHLC, formerly DHCD) and city of Boston funding.

“We truly appreciate Studio G’s commitment to innovative and cost-effective solutions that embrace environmental, economic and social sustainability,” said Danielle Ferrier, CEO of Heading Home. “This building design will ensure a safe, healthy and stable environment for the homeless children and their parents who will be living there.”
