Walsh Bros. honored by AGC for dome restoration project at MIT

June 17, 2010 - Construction Design & Engineering

The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America recently honored Walsh Brothers, Inc. with the 2010 AON Build America Award. This national award was given in recognition of Walsh Bros.' building 10 dome restoration project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Having a history in masonry reconstruction projects Walsh Bros.was selected by MIT to manage the project. The engineer was Simpson Gumpertz and Heger. The project brought life to the original details of the 1913 Building 10, the grand dome by replacing the original dome stones while simultaneously waterproofing the dome to prevent future leaks. The dome is located above MIT's active Barker Engineering library and for years was plagued by frequent leaks. Due to an immovable end date, the six-month project schedule required expert phasing and communication with both the owner and architect.
Walsh Bros. was able to capitalize on the project team's combined 80-years of experience and apply original 1913 construction techniques with cutting edge construction materials and technology to yield a successful completion.

The Aon Build America Award winners were announced as part of AGC's 91st annual convention in Orlando, Florida. For over two decades this prestigious award has been given in recognition of a project's complexity, innovation, success, and significance within the construction industry and this great country's history. The Build America Award is the industry's most coveted and selective with the winners being carefully selected by a panel of seasoned industry peers throughout the country. Century old construction techniques and replication methodologies were utilized in the project approach making it a stand out in the Building Renovation Category for the award.

A fourth generation-managed, family-owned firm, Walsh Bros. was recognized for its contribution to the advancement of the construction industry along with its community involvement and philanthropy, project innovation, leadership and collaboration and environmental stewardship. Over its 109 year history the firm has had a major impact on Boston's skyline through its construction of some of the city's largest and most complex buildings in the arts, cultural, academic and healthcare markets. This is the third Build America Award received by the firm - having received a similar accolade for the renovation of Fenway Park in 2006 and most recently in 2009 for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Clerestory Window Restoration project.
