Rental Car Center, Logan Airport, Boston, MA

Logan International Airport has undergone some changes with the Wayne J. Griffin Electric Inc. team providing the electrical installation work on two construction projects.
A Rental Car Center was completed at Logan Airport. The 1.3 million s/f facility, encompassing a four-level garage and 120,000 s/f customer service center, has united the airport's nine rental car companies into one centralized location and utilizes a shared common bus system with Massport.
Griffin Electric installed a 15kv distribution center, with a substation and power distribution at the facility, in addition to LED lighting throughout. Furthermore, the team was in charge of setting up systems which included emergency generators, fire alarm, lighting protection and telecom within the parking garage, customer service and quick turnaround areas. Griffin also installed a 150kw solar array on the roof of the garage, which consisted of 616 solar panels. Senior project manager, Tom Donahue, with foremen, Mike Catorio and Dan Furtado, managed the on-site Griffin team.
The telecommunications package, under the direction of Scott Keenan, project manager - telecom and Daniel Hume, foreman - telecom, included voice and data cabling and the installation of FIDs (flight information displays) throughout the customer service center QRA's (quick turnaround areas). Additionally, Griffin oversaw the installation of a video wall in the GTOC (ground transportation operations center), consisting of twenty-four 46" flat panel displays set up by the telecom team. Staff at the GTOC uses the displays to view up-to-the-minute traffic information, necessary to ensure that the Logan Airport services are running efficiently.
Construction manager, Suffolk Construction Co., architect Pierce, Goodwin Alexander and Linville/Fennick McCredie Architecture and electrical engineer, Parsons Brinckerhoff, worked with Massport on this project. The project is anticipating LEED Silver certification.
In addition to the new Rental Car Center, the airport's 97,000 s/f Terminal B has been upgraded with new features such as 24 ticket counters, eight departure lounges, a concession area, baggage carousel and consolidated security checkpoints, including additional lanes for passengers, encompassing 100,000 s/f of extra space to the terminal. Updated furnishings and the convenience of outlets at every seat within the terminal were also added for the comfort of travelers.
On-site, Griffin Electric was tasked with providing power and lighting to the facility, which included LED lighting, lighting controls and access controls. Systems for fire alarm and emergency generator were also part of the electrical contract. The Griffin team was under the direction of senior project manager Tom Donahue, and foremen Tom Ferronetti, Dan Furtado and Austin Vaughn.
Griffin was also in charge of the telecommunications installation in Terminal B. The scope of work consisted of voice and data cabling and systems for public address, access control and CCTV, with integration into the existing Massport systems. Additionally, the telecom team installed a Digital Passenger Information Program, which consists of both freestanding and wall-mounted visual display banks, in order to provide passengers with up-to-dated travel information throughout the terminals. Scott Keenan, project manager -telecom, and Daniel Hume, foreman - telecom, oversaw the telecommunications portion of the on-site electrical work for Griffin.
Working directly with Massport through project completion was construction manager Suffolk Construction Co., architect AECOM and electrical engineer TMP Consulting Engineers. Faith Group LLC served as a design consultant for the telecommunications portion of the project.
