Windover Construction earned three 2012 Excellence in Construction Awards from the Massachusetts Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).
Windover won a second place in the "Pre-engineered Building" category and a Green award in the annual statewide competition for building the Helena J. Sturnick Student Village at Montserrat College of Art. The company also won second place in the "Residential" category for renovation of an oceanfront estate in Manchester.
The Green award is presented for projects that demonstrate significant achievements in green and sustainable construction. Windover is one of just 13 contractors selected as recipients of ABC's 2012 Excellence in Construction Awards.
"Windover's work represents the state-of-the-art in construction," said Massachusetts ABC president Greg Beeman. "They should be justifiably proud of this achievement. Work of this caliber is helping to raise the standards of excellence throughout the construction industry."
Windover saved time and money by using a modular approach on the student village project that allowed construction to begin while the foundations were still in process. They eliminated the need for temporary weather enclosures or heating systems by building the structure in an off-site, climate-controlled environment. Moving the units from the fabrication site to campus and then assembling them required highly detailed logistics and scheduling.
For the estate, Windover found the same stone from same quarry used in original 1890 construction to keep within home's historic context. They dramatically enhanced ocean views by creating an open concept in section of the house added during the 1920s. The technology used includes a sound system designed to interface with Apple products
Architects Siemasko & Verbridge for the student center and TMS Architects for the oceanfront estate were recognized along with Windover as part of the project team.
The award winners were determined by an independent panel of expert judges based on execution of design, craftsmanship, attention to detail, safety and other considerations. The judges were Domenic D'Eramo of Tetra Tech Rizzo; Russel Feldman of TBA Architects, Inc.; Leslie Haines of Parsons; George Khouri of George J. Khouri & Associates and Vernon Woodworth of AKF Group LLC.
Associated Builders and Contractors is the largest construction trade association in Massachusetts, representing more than 400 construction and construction-related firms, including developers, general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and associates.
