Shepley Bulfinch completed design case study of 516,000 s/f Yale-New Haven Smilow Cancer Hospital. First conceptualized in 2003, sustainability and LEED played key roles in what is projected to be the largest LEED certified hospital in the US.
Highlights of the project include:
*Optimized HVAC systems, independently commissioned and set up for measurement and verification;
*Minimum 75% salvaged construction waste - currently tracking at above 95% which will gain an exemplary performance point for substantially exceeding requirements;
*Intensive Green roof at the Healing Garden provides soothing respite for patients and families, and visual relief for chemotherapy patients and inpatients looking down from above;
*Highest standards of indoor air quality, monitoring systems, and pollutant source control = better for patient & staff (low VOC, centralized location for chemicals, etc.); and
* Site selection and reduced parking capacity promote use of public, alternative transportation.
