City of Pawtucket, RI

After 13 years of steering the commuter rail station project through state and federal regulatory hoops, on November 2nd, a ribbon cutting was held to break the ground of a new $50 million transit hub. The Pawtucket/Central Falls commuter rail station, with its dedicated platforms for northbound and southbound MBTA service, connected by a pedestrian bridge overpass, elevators, ramps and stairs, is scheduled to begin service by 2022. Five opportunity zones have been approved in the city, including three around the new 150-acre transit-oriented district known as the Conant Thread District, which bring incredible development opportunities in vacant and underutilized historic mills surrounding the commuter rail. This is the most important economic development project in decades. The city is also poised to approve a new joint TOD planning district with the abutting city of Central Falls. which promises flexible, innovative and streamlined zoning for development.
