Turner and Hebrew Senior Life start Adelson Campus of Newbridge

Hebrew Senior Life and Turner Construction have begun construction at the 162 acre parcel off Rte. 135 for the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon Adelson Campus of Newbridge on the Charles residential community. The campus has been named in honor of the Boston area native and commercial real estate developer and his wife for their $15 million gift to the project. The site will contain 256 units of senior supportive housing, 91 assisted living apartments, 48 short term recuperative beds and 220 long term care rooms. Newbridge is being financed with tax exempt bonds underwritten by Merrill Lynch and Herbert Sims & Co., an investment banking firm in Southport, Conn. When completed in the fall of 2009, the campus will offer a broad spectrum of housing choices for seniors. In addition, it will provide a full continuum of health care, including outpatient clinics, home care, short and long term medical acute care. Approximately 100 acres of the site, purchased for over $19 million, will be preserved as open space and the landscaping will feature drought resistant and low-water-use plantings. A geothermal energy system, featuring 400 wells, to cool and heat the buildings will add to the project's innovative design and lessen independence on fossil fuels. The Carl and Ruth Shapiro Residential and Community Center, named to honor their generous gift will be the main center of activity. It will include recreation services for residents. Main campus architect is Perkins Eastman of Pittsburgh, Penn. Cambridge architect Shan Krieger Sieniewicz designed one of the residences. Stantec, Inc. is the landscape architect. Leggat McCall Properties' Robert Walsh is the development manager.
