2022 Ones to Watch: Devereux Sgammato, Assistant Project Manager at Vantage Builders, Inc.

June 10, 2022 - Spotlights

What recent project, transaction or accomplishment are you most proud of? I recently completed my first project where I took the lead as the project manager. A key challenge was keeping a majority of the space functional for the client, during the construction phase. I was able to manage multiple superintendents and laborers, while coordinating our schedules around a busy client’s work. It definitely helped me be more effective as a project manager. I am proud to say that, although I was both excited and nervous, the client was very pleased with our work and has already hired Vantage Builders for another project.

What does it take to succeed in your specific industry? One of the best lessons I’ve learned regards decision-making. I’ve found that it’s critical to use all the resources available to gain as much information as possible before making any crucial decision. I’ve been very fortunate in my career to have had tremendous support from my managers and colleagues. Their collective guidance has helped make me a more effective and efficient manager. I’ve also learned that, no matter what roadblocks present themselves, to keep moving forward.

What led you to your current profession? My first job in the industry was in biomedical construction, which I began while I was still earning my degree in Mechanical Engineering. I had the opportunity to work on a billion-dollar, ground-up high rise in the Seaport District. Seeing all the moving parts of the project come together harmoniously made me realize that I was more attracted to the project management side of the industry and helped confirm my decision to get into construction.

What are the top 3 items on your bucket list? I want to visit every continent at least once. I want to further my education (Master’s degree or doctorate; additional certifications). I also want to flip a property, including doing the fit-out and restoration.

What are you doing when you aren’t working? I love to travel. I play the drums and like to make music and jam with musician friends. I also run, golf, fish and spend time with friends and family.
