In February 1942, the Hingham Shipyard was born. With 15,000 workers on-site building the Navy's newest ship, the Destroyer Escort, the shipyard produced 227 ships over 3 ½ years during World War II, a record not claimed by any other shipyard in the U.S.
In June 2010, the Hingham Shipyard will celebrate its rebirth. With 1.2 million s/f of waterfront residences, office and retail, the Shipyard will be the South Shore's newest transit-oriented multi-use development. Residents at the Hingham Shipyard can experience true "car-free" living. With Hewitt's Cove adjacent to the Shipyard, residents can take the popular MBTA ferry to Boston, and then return home and do their grocery shopping at Fresh Market, see a movie at the Patriot Cinemas, work out at Bodyscapes and grab some dinner and a cocktail at Alma Nove, Typhoon or Hingham Beerworks. In many ways, Hingham Shipyard defines the concept of "New Urbanism."
Samuels & Associates has developed The Launch at Hingham Shipyard - 240,00 s/f of office (30,000 s/f) and commercial (210,000 s/f) space. Samuels is also developing the Moorings at Hingham Shipyard - three mid-rise buildings of 94 condominiums.
The retailers and restaurants include:
Alma Nove (Mediterranean cuisine from chef/owner Paul Wahlberg)
Bed, Bath and Beyond

Eastern Mountain Sports
The Fresh Market (the first to open in Massachusetts)
Hingham Beerworks (South Shore sister restaurant to Boston Beerworks)
