Project of the Month: RESCOM Architectural and Page Building Const. complete 103,000 s/f Zero Waste Solutions facility

Rochester, MA RESCOM Architectural Inc. and Page Building Construction completed the 103,000 s/f Zero Waste Solutions (ZWS) facility, one of the most technically advanced recycling facilities in the world. Zero Waste Solutions is the sister company of ABC Disposal Service, Inc. and New Bedford Waste Services, LLC.

The facility will accept residential and commercial waste streams as well as single-stream recyclables, co-mingled recyclables and source-separated recyclables. ZWS has been equipped with the latest recycling technologies including many different size screening systems, magnets, sophisticated optical sorting systems, and eddy-current separator systems – which separate non-magnetic metals like aluminum. These systems are all designed to automatically separate recyclable materials into different categories of commodities. The CP Group provided and installed the recycling equipment.

The building includes 91,000 s/f of open bay warehouse space for the waste and recycling equipment, as well as 12,000 s/f of office space spread over three floors for the business operations of the facility. The pre-engineered energy efficient structure includes modern mixed office spaces and employee amenities, including support services, lockers rooms and a cafeteria.

“We were pleased to be selected as the architect for this exciting project. Through collaboration with the project team, we were able to understand the requirements of the building and provide a design that was suitable for the building’s operation,” said Greg Siroonian, president of RESCOM Architectural.

The size of the building and utility requirements proved to be challenging in this rural area. “Bringing in the properly sized utilities to serve the building required extensive engineering and coordination efforts with the town, local utility companies and project sub-contractors,” said Anthony DiGiantommaso, vice president of Page Building Construction.

President of Zero Waste Solutions, Mike Camara said, “Having our ZWS recycling facility finally open is a great tribute to the years of hard work of our employees, project team, my family and I. This will benefit our customers for many years to come. We are very proud opening one of the most technically advanced recycling facilities in the world, and a great asset for Massachusetts.”

Project team: RESCOM Architectural, Page Building Construction Co., Heat Pumps Unlimited, CITIWORKS Corp., LC Mechanical, RALCO Electric & Generator, Time Savers Construction Services and Flood Consulting.
