HARVARD, MA Principals of Maugel DeStefano Architects Jonathan Cocker, Mike Kunz, and Mark Pelletier have become equal majority shareholders of the firm. In January 2023, after 30 years as founder and president, Brent Maugel will step away from day-to-day operations and move to an advisory role serving as a design influencer on major projects.

The leadership transition plan was put in motion in 2018, when Studio Managers Cocker (healthcare), Kunz (industrial & commercial), and Pelletier (science and advanced technology) were elevated to principals. The team has driven the firm’s strategic direction and managed daily operations. This latest announcement follows record growth in all targeted market sectors, including science & advanced technology, industrial, healthcare, multifamily, and custom residential.

“Brent Maugel has been a noted design influencer for more than 40 years. It has been a privilege to work alongside one of the icons of the New England architectural community,” said Mark Pelletier. “Jon, Mike, and I are grateful for his mentorship and for entrusting the Maugel DeStefano legacy to us. We have an incredible opportunity ahead as we begin this next chapter with record revenues, a rapidly expanding client base, strong talent, and optimism for the future,”

“Jon, Mike, and Mark are inspirational leaders with great insight, energy, creativity, and intellect. With more than 75 years of combined industry experience, they are battle-tested and have a clear path to continued prosperity,” said Brent Maugel. “This team values our client relationships and cares deeply about the well-being of our people—they are perfect leaders for the future of Maugel DeStefano Architects.”

Principals Dan Barton and Lisa DeStefano roles will remain unchanged.

“As designers, we have exceptional opportunities to follow our passions throughout our lifetime. My new role will allow me to pursue those interests at a more leisurely pace,” said Maugel. “I am honored to have worked alongside many great commercial real estate industry leaders and Architects throughout my career. It has been a fantastic journey, one that I am truly humbled to have experienced.”
