Connecticut College New London Hall Life Science Building

April 17, 2014 - Spotlights

Connecticut College New London Hall.

By renovating New London Hall and building a small addition rather than construct on a new site, the project team minimized the amount of materials, reused materials where possible and preserved open space. Granite rock and other slate roofing from the original building were retained during demolition and will be reused by the college's campus during future construction.
Materials from the site were also reused as centerpieces within the building. A prominent feature of the building is the reclaimed wood from a black oak tree removed to enable greenhouse renovations. This reclaimed wood was used to build continuous counters in collaborative "cafe" spaces on each floor of the link, as well as for furnishings in the entry lobby. Additionally, reused doors and frames, chalk boards and woodwork within the building were reused connecting the new addition to the building and site's history. This project is LEED-NC 3 Gold Certified.
