Consigli Construction Co., Inc.'s Maine operations in the city have been selected to provide construction management services for Central Maine Medical Center's (CMMC) $45 million, 51,000 s/f expansion and renovation project, which will effectively double the size of the existing emergency department and add over 10,000 s/f to the hospital's laboratory.
The project, which is scheduled to break ground in the fall, will incorporate a three-story addition that will provide a new laboratory on the lower level, new and expanded emergency services on the ground floor and a partial build-out of the new first floor. The expansion will also include 11,000 s/f of alterations and updates on the lower level and an additional 25,000 s/f of renovations on the ground floor.
Key to the project's success is a complex phasing plan, which will enable CMMC to maintain full, 24/7 operations without interruptions. The team will adopt unique hours, working nights, weekends and during off-hours to ensure minimal interruptions for patients, staff and visitors. The project will also operate on an accelerated, "fast-track" schedule to reach completion as quickly as possible.
Also included in the expansion project are numerous sustainable features which offer both patients and staff a healthier workplace environment. The addition will incorporate a large glass curtainwall and numerous windows to bring plenty of natural daylight into the building. Further, a comprehensive waste management plan is targeting a recycling rate of 80% of demolition debris. The team will focus on using locally-sourced materials as well.
The expansion will also benefit the Maine economy, as the project is expected to directly employ 120 workers on-site at the height of operations, and will indirectly impact another 500 jobs in the Lewiston area.
The project architect is MorrisSwitzer of Portland.
