Fallon Clinic, the largest multi-specialty group practice in Central Massachusetts, has selected the architectural and interior design firm of Margulies & Associates and the construction manager Consigli Construction Co., Inc. for the design and renovation of new 10,000 square foot facility at 630 Plantation Street in Worcester.
Once completed, the building will be occupied by New England Scope, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fallon Clinic, which provides outpatient endoscopic services. The building will house four procedure rooms with recovery areas, patient prep areas, waiting areas and exam and consult rooms. With 260 physicians, Fallon Clinic offers the region's most comprehensive array of primary care and specialty services, supported with cutting-edge technologies and service-oriented processes.
One of Boston's most innovative architectural and interior design firms, Margulies & Associates has expertise in managing project teams of sub-consultants and vendors on a defined schedule and budget, and successfully working with regulatory organizations including Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), and requirements such as those under the Americans with Disabilities Act and HIPPA. The firm has extensive experience working on complex, multi-phase projects for a variety of clients, including Massachusetts General Hospital and Caritas Christi Health Care.
"We selected Margulies & Associates for its relevant healthcare experience and unique ability to design interactively with direct input from doctors and staff. Our medical staff has enjoyed being a part of the design process," said John Duggan, director of Facility Services at Fallon Clinic.
A leader in environmentally-sensitive construction, Consigli will oversee the gut renovation and fit-out of the existing building. Consigli's workers will self-perform several aspects of the project, which is expected to conclude in spring of 2008. The project scope includes extensive interior demolition, a new exterior façade, new office and examination space, medical gas installation and mechanical and aesthetic upgrades. Consigli has previously managed projects at Fallon Clinic's Plantation Street and North Lake Avenue sites.
"Consigli Construction has earned a reputation for its ability to work within sensitive medical environments," said Duggan. "The New England Scope Project will greatly benefit from this experience."
R.W. Sullivan is providing the design for the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and medical gas systems for the project. The cost-effective mechanical system design, utilizing the latest technology in condensing boiler hydronics, variable volume airflows and HVAC system controls, was engineered to provide efficient heating and cooling while minimizing energy use and costs. The new lighting system will provide more efficient lighting fixtures and controls in the procedure and recovery rooms to minimize glare and provide the required illumination levels needed by the nursing staff. The plumbing system design utilizes a state-of-the-art fluid handling system that minimizes the staff handling for procedural waste while the medical gas system design exceeds the oxygen and medical gas standards as directed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Fallon Clinic held aground-breaking ceremony at the building site on Friday, November 2, 2007.
