New Britain, CT The New England based civil and environmental engineering firm, Fuss & O’Neill, has been selected along with innovative art and architecture firm, Svigals + Partners, to create a signature structure on Main St. Together these two firms will exercise their expertise in building what could potentially be the most well known structure in the state. This signature structure will bring together streetscape designs, public art, and complete streets. The project is titled the Beehive Bridge to match the theme of New Britain.

Like many cities in the United States, highway infrastructure has become an ongoing issue. This project will work to create an overpass and transform the pedestrian and bicycle conditions connecting the downtown area to the CTfastrak station.

The structure is intended to be very unique with an oversized aluminum and illuminated beehive sculpture as the main focal point. On each side of the bridge, tall, luminous orange and honey yellow panes will stand to create a heaving wave. The massive structure will be topped with a glowing and energy-efficient, LED lighting system.

The project is expected to begin construction next year with a completion date in 2018.
