Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. completes electrical and telecom work on Deerfield Academy’s revamped dining hall

Deerfield, MA Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. (Griffin Electric), a leading electrical contractor throughout New England and the Southeast for nearly five decades, recently finished an electrical renovation on a 62,000 s/f dining hall at Deerfield Academy. This private boarding and day school serves students in grades 9-12, and its dining hall will accommodate approximately 650 students.

Established in 1797, Deerfield Academy is one of the oldest secondary schools in the country. Academy leaders aimed to modernize its central dining space, first constructed over 75 years ago, without sacrificing the unique atmosphere known by generations of graduates. In addition to expanding the size of the hall to accommodate more seating, renovations included a large production kitchen, state-of-the-art bakery, employee dining space, and two dishwashing rooms.

Griffin Electric’s team handled a wide scope of electrical work on the project, such as the restoration of historic lighting throughout multiple rooms as well as the installation of a new district generator, fire alarm, boiler plant, and 94K solar array. The Griffin team also implemented utility upgrades and oversaw all telecom work on-site, including the integration of the dining hall’s fiber optics network with the rest of campus.

Fontaine Brothers, Inc. of Springfield, Mass. served as the project’s general contractor. RFS Engineering of Boston served as the electrical engineer, while Architectural Resources Cambridge (ARC), also of Boston, was the architect.

In the electrical contracting business since 1978, Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. has served on projects in a range of markets throughout New England and Southeast for nearly 50 years. Headquartered in Holliston, Mass., Griffin Electric also has regional offices in Pelham, AL, Doraville, GA, Charlotte, NC and Raleigh-Durham, NC. The company’s in-house apprenticeship training program is federally recognized and state approved, and has helped many individuals obtain their electrical and telecom licensure over more than three decades. ENR (Engineering News-Record) ranked Griffin Electric 26th nationally in its 2025 listing of the top 50 electrical contractors.

ENR has also ranked the company among the top electrical contractors in New England and the Southeast for several years, including the current #1 listing in New England and Massachusetts in 2025. Griffin Electric employs nearly 1,500 individuals.
