Hurley of America's customized facility solutions enhance Boston's International Airport and their LEED NB status

March 20, 2008 - Spotlights
At Hurley, the keystone of the company's success has been its ability to adapt and to tailor specific operational programs to each client's unique requirements. The versatility of Hurley's team members to constantly adjust to client's specific requirements has been the cornerstone of Hurley's culture dating back 50 years, when Richard Hurley created the company.
In recognition of Hurley's premier status in the industry, Hurley was awarded a BOMA Pinnacle Award for outstanding customer service in May. And no wonder! Today, facility managers are focusing on the public's heightened awareness of climate change and the environmental impact it can have on individual wellness. This is why Hurley is taking the lead when it comes to providing for a healthier and more environmentally friendly work environment. The standard practice that Hurley employs on site include:
* The choice of cleaning chemical lines designed to reduce the flow of toxins into the air and into our waterways;
* The use of natural and petroleum based trash bags, and;
* The use of paper products, which offer the least impact to the environment.
Powered equipment with reduced noise enhancements, HEPA filtration, and defined low VOC cleaning processes enable Hurley to enhance new and existing building applications for Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Design (LEED) certification. Through maintaining an active membership in the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Hurley is on the front line for the council's initiatives and global best practices. Our goal is to support BOMA GoGreen and LEED compliance where clients share the vision of creating these benefits for their tenants and staff. These environments must be supported by a supplier partner that can deliver smart and sustainable facility maintenance and Hurley is there with the experience and expertise to help make their visions a reality.
Within the city's airport site, Hurley provides support through several specific initiatives:
The Exclusive Use of a Green Seal Certified Product Line
Along with reducing environmental impact, the green seal certified product line assists in reducing the release of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) into the workplace, thus protecting employees, travellers and other staff who are present at the facility every day. VOC's have been shown to have short and long term adverse health effects on individuals who suffer from asthma, allergies, headaches and related irritations.
The Optimized Equipment Selection
Powered vacuums and scrubbers used in the Hurley cleaning and maintenance process now employ HEPA filtration systems rather than the standard paper filters and foam based scrubbing versus traditional scrubbing methods. These advanced cleaning technologies achieve outstanding results using less water, contributing to a healthier, cleaner and safer work environment. As well, superior cleaning efficiencies are realized in our use of ergonomically designed, quieter backpack vacuums that contribute to a more enjoyable environment, versus standard upright vacuum cleaners.

The Application of Best Practices
The cleaning methods at clients' sites that utilize only the latest environmentally superior product lines and the most advanced technological equipment available today, form the basis of the comprehensive hands-on teaching employed at the Hurley University Training Program. Expanding existing processes and thinking out of the box ensures that the final result meets the required standards.
As part of its sustainable solutions program, Hurley has engaged new initiatives that include technologies that reduce their vehicle emissions and their paper consumption by providing electronic reports and timesheet processing directly to our customers and employees. With the introduction of real-time reporting, Hurley has developed capabilities to closely monitor its day-to-day operations, enhancing overall service delivery.

As an employer of over 5,000 front line employees, Hurley has remained on the forefront by recognizing and implementing the changes, patterns, and trends in the ever-changing facility maintenance industry. Hurley is focused on ensuring that its technologies and processes drive industry standards. The exceptional levels of performance that has been Hurley's trademark translates to employees who today are involved in ensuring that our industry-leading services can be delivered using safe products, processes and equipment in conjunction with safe and sustainable energy. Maintaining the USGBC status of certified LEED NB (New Building) achieved at the Boston Airport's Ter- minal A is without a doubt due to the industry-leading support provided by Hurley's ongoing solutions and cleaning technologies.

It's the entrepreneurial spirit that has earned Hurley a reputation as the premier provider of value added solutions and overall satisfaction of services.
