The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) recently approved the formation of IREM China Shanghai Chapter No. 118. It is IREM's first chapter in China and third in Asia and joins 80 others across the U.S. and 13 elsewhere around the globe. Applauding the establishment of the new chapter, IREM 2011 president Ronald Goss, CPM, said, "Having met IREM's members in Shanghai, I am impressed by the caliber of property management services they are providing and by their commitment to advancing our profession and promoting the CPM brand in China."
The China Shanghai chapter grew out of an agreement signed in 2008 between IREM and the Shanghai Weston Real Estate Management Institute, a division of Brawman International Group. Shanghai Weston has sponsored two rounds of courses needed to complete the education requirements to earn IREM's prestigious Certified Property Manager (CPM) designation, with another round of courses scheduled to begin in August 2011.
IREM China Shanghai Chapter No. 118 currently has 35 CPM Members and four CPM Candidates and will be led by Qui Liu, CPM, who will serve as the chapter's first president. Liu is head of asset management for Shanghai Land Group Co., Ltd., and was general manager of Shanghai World Expo Land Holding Company which was responsible for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo that attracted over 73 million visitors during its six-month run. The new chapter's jurisdiction comprises the administrative divisions of Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhegiang, which together have a population of nearly 150 million.
Offshore interest in IREM's CPM designation and the education that supports it has grown dramatically in recent years, as evidenced by the fact that the percentage of enrollments from international students matriculating through the CPM program has grown in the last five years from 20% to nearly 40%. Additionally, one-third of all new CPM Members are coming are from outside the U.S.
