EBC Northern New England Dam Management Program: Small Dam Repair, Rehabilitation or Removal

Broad public interest in the future of small dams in northern New England provides an opportunity to explore alternatives for dealing with small dams, implications of removal versus rehabilitation, and the costs/benefits of choosing the best path forward. Removal or modification of small dams for aquatic habitat restoration; extreme weather events and their impacts on existing small dams; and the potential for new hydropower development at existing dams to support local renewable energy infrastructure are all potentially viable options to consider for a dam's future. This EBC program will summarize the dam-related regulatory frameworks in the three states, provide an overview of the current permitting requirements for dam repair and removal, discuss lessons learned from case studies, and provide an open discussion on community issues, partnerships and funding for these types of projects.
