The Beal Cos. named recipient of 2009 NAIOP Distinguished RE Award

According to NAIOP Massachusetts, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, The Beal Cos. will receive NAIOP's 2009 Distinguished Real Estate Award for achievements in real estate, charitable activities, and community betterment. The award will be presented to The Beal Cos. at NAIOP's Annual Awards Gala on Tuesday, November 17 at the Westin Waterfront Hotel in Boston. Also being honored that evening will be John Fish, chairman and CEO of Suffolk Construction, who will receive NAIOP's Public Service Award.

Established in Boston in 1888, The Beal Cos., LLP is a closely-held, full-service real estate investment and development firm, actively pursuing investments in all segments of the industry. Acting as a principal and investor on its own behalf, as well as on behalf of partners and clients, Beal's core competencies include: acquisition, development, property management, construction management, consulting and brokerage of all forms of commercial and residential properties; from new construction to historic preservation.
With a philosophy grounded in prudent risk-taking and an unshakable sense of integrity, Beal has earned a reputation for innovation, profitability, and unquestionable quality. In the 1970s, Beal was the first to develop incubator biotech space in the Boston/Cambridge area, and a decade later, they were the first real estate company to invest in life sciences in suburban Boston, when they purchased Ledgemont Center in Lexington. Known for their appreciation of historic preservation they have completed several major preservation projects, including the art deco Batterymarch Building, the Custom House, and 126-130 Beacon St., among others. Beal owns and manages signature area properties including One Kendall Square, a mixed use urban retail and commercial space in Cambridge, Mass. as well as Seaport Square, a 460,000 s/f office building where Beal recently made improvements to the landscaping, on-site parking and 2-story atrium lobby. Most recently, The Beal Cos. partnered with the Related Cos. to develop The Clarendon, a mixed-use residential building in Boston's Back Bay that includes the city's newest luxury housing units, along with a new destination Ken Himmel restaurant and a new Post Office.
The firm is deeply involved in the community, bringing their trademark energy and focus to many civic and cultural endeavors throughout the region. Among the local organizations that have benefited from their support are: The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Zoos, The New England Aquarium, The United Way, and the Combined Jewish Philanthropies. Their charitable work has also extended into health care and sciences, supporting and raising money for the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and the Brigham & Women's Hospital.
Fish is chairman and CEO of Suffolk Construction Co., one of the most successful privately held general building contractors in the country known for its strong corporate culture and loyal employees, clients, and partners. A noted philanthropist, Fish sits on numerous boards and industry posts responsible for improving the lives of children and families through public and private education, including serving as chairman of the board of the Red & Blue Foundation, which assists underprivileged and underserved children across the country through education and community initiatives.
Fish continues to give back to the Greater Boston community where he grew up and currently resides, serving on a number of boards that influence the arts, healthcare and neighborhood development within the city of Boston. In 2007, he partnered with mayor Thomas Menino, Boys and Girls Club of Boston and philanthropist Jack Connors on the construction of the incredible Camp Harbor View summer camp for underprivileged children on Long Island in Boston Harbor. Recently, the Red & Blue Foundation collaborated with Mayor Menino in developing the Boston Scholar Athlete Program, aimed at improving academic achievement through athletics in the Boston Public Schools.
