Lowell, MA Mayor Edward Kennedy announces today, a special invitation to developers, real estate professionals and prospective commercial tenants to attend an upcoming open house and site tour at the Hamilton Canal Innovation District (HCID) on Wednesday, June 21 from 10:00- 11:30 AM. at the UMass Lowell Innovation Hub (i-Hub) at 110 Canal St. "The City is pleased to showcase this prime development site to the Greater Boston commercial developers. This will be the beginning of extensive marketing of this unique site." said Kennedy. The HCID district is a 15 acre redevelopment site located at the gateway to Lowell's downtown. This site presents one of the best opportunities in the Commonwealth to achieve a transit-oriented, waterfront (canals) development in the heart of a vibrant and vital city.

The Hamilton Canal Innovation District, a collection of 17 separate parcels located in the heart of Lowell, will transform the primary gateway into the city by doubling the size of its downtown with a new, urban site that will connect the transportation hub at the Gallagher Terminal (MBTA to Boston) and Lowell Connector with the core downtown, the Arts District, and the major event venues. This new development will further strengthen the residential and commercial markets within the City.

The city is seeking to build upon prior successful projects in this district including the Appleton Mills artist housing; the University of Massachusetts' Medical Devices Development Center (M2D2); the Innovation Hub for early-stage entrepreneurs; and the Commonwealth's new Judicial Center, a $200 million project, currently underway.

During this event, attendees will have the opportunity to hear directly from Jay Ash, the Commonwealth's Secretary of Housing and Economic Development, University of Mass. president Martin Meehan, city manager Kevin Murphy, among successful Lowell businesses. This HCID further ensures that the City of Lowell is well poised to attract significant investment and become a desired destination for "Work-Live-Play" north of Boston.
