Foxboro, MA American Window Film, Inc. is busy installing 3M Thinsulate Window Film, an innovative, Low-E, climate control film and recent addition to 3M Company’s line of window films. New Englanders are well aware of the value of adding insulation to walls, roofs, in attics and around pipes - but often overlook windows! More than 30% of heating and cooling energy used in U.S. buildings is due to heat lost or gained through windows. 3M’s Thinsulate Window Film, considered insulation for windows, is generating interest. An effective, all-season solution for upgrading existing windows, 3M’s Thinsulate Window Film will not compromise your view or your budget. This high visible light transmission film provides a rapid return-on-investment through energy cost savings.
The American Window Film sales team has been fielding questions about 3M’s Thinsulate Window Film. A few of the most common are:
What is Low-E? Low-E stands for Low Emissivity or low heat transfer through radiation. 3M’s Thinsulate Window Film, a Low-E product, is designed to help reflect radiant heat rather than allowing glass to absorb it.
How is 3M’s Thinsulate Window Film different from other solar control films? Solar control films are primarily focused on the solar energy spectrum and are designed to help keep solar heat gain from entering a building. To be effective, the glass needs to be exposed to sunlight. 3M’s Thinsulate Window Film also reduces solar heat gain; but in addition, it helps prevent the transfer of radiant heat from one side of a glass pane to the other. Radiant heat is based solely on the temperature difference between the outside and the inside of the pane. This film further prevents the transfer of excessive heat to interior space in warmer months and the escape of heat outside in colder months.
How much insulation does 3M’s Thinsulate Window Film provide? A single pane window loses approximately twenty times as much heat as the same area in an adjacent well-insulated wall. 3M’s Thinsulate Window Film helps improve the insulation value of a typical single-pane window close to that of a double-pane; a double pane to close to that of a triple-pane.
