Cannon Design awarded expansion at Children's Hospital Boston's life science research facility

Cannon Design has been awarded a major expansion for Children's Hospital Boston's life science research facility. Cannon Design has been engaged to provide design and planning services for the development of two additional leased floors in the Center for Life Science Boston in the Longwood Medical Area. The new space encompasses 50,000 s/f and will allow the growth of Children's Hospital's endocrine, genetics and genomics research programs along with a shared genomics instrumentation core support area. The research performed at the Center will increase the understanding and development of treatment for obesity, muscular dystrophies and neurological illnesses. The two floors of new space are in addition to the three floors in the building already occupied by Children's Hospital. The design of the new space utilizes modular laboratory bench arrangements, as well as interchangeable room functions—maximizing the flexibility of the space to adapt to changing research requirements. In addition, the design strategically locates elements of the program to maximize daylight in common spaces and laboratories while controlling light into sensitive laser and microscopy rooms. Cannon Design's team for the project is led by Robert Peterson, AIA, LEED AP, who is serving as project principal, and includes Erik Lustgarten, AIA, LEED AP, project manager; James Foundas, project architect; and Jennifer Lauring, LEED AP, design team member.
