Dellbrook|JK Scanlan completes two Cape Cod Healthcare expansion projects

Hyannis, MA Dellbrook | JK Scanlan has completed major expansions for the Emergency Centers of Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, and Falmouth Hospital in Falmouth. Combined, the projects resulted in an additional 44,000 s/f of new space for Cape Cod Healthcare, and the renovation of 23,000 s/f.  These projects had a total project value of $27.6 million.

Cape Cod Healthcare decided to launch construction efforts in 2012, after experiencing an increase in Emergency Center (EC) visits over many years. (Currently, the Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Department is the third busiest in Mass.). Cape Cod Healthcare chose Dellbrook | JK Scanlan based on the firm’s experience in the healthcare sector and its familiarity with both campuses, strengthened by its involvement in more than $54 million worth of projects over the last 15 years.

For Dellbrook | JK Scanlan, the challenges were two-fold:  to conduct two major expansions simultaneously, while managing demolition and construction activities in an environment where patients, staff and ambulances are constantly coming and going.

Today, each hospital is home to modern, new EC facilities that enhance patient care, increase patient capacity, and consolidate ER services and offices. The Cape Cod Hospital expansion unfolded over three, fast-moving phases that resulted in a new Emergency Center that is nearly double the size of the previous department. Phase one involved a complete renovation of interior spaces, including a new entrance and triage areas. Phase two focused on the construction of a building that now serves as the new emergency center for the hospital. Phase three, completed at the end of 2015, entailed the building of a new radiology suite dedicated exclusively to EC spaces, as well as a new staff lounge, conference room, on call lounge, and administrative offices and support spaces.

Similarly, Dellbrook | JK Scanlan led expansion efforts at Falmouth Hospital, which included the new construction of a 19,000 s/f emergency room, as well as a 3,000 s/f renovation of the old ER reception area.  The initiative unfolded in two phases with aggressive timelines. Phase one consisted of the new waiting, triage, and emergency care areas.  This work also included a large earth shoring operation and the construction of a permanent retaining wall to support the patient and visitor drop off area Phase two involved the renovation of the old entrance and triage area which integrates with a new, expanded waiting area, as well as the construction of new meeting and support spaces. According to Seth Adams, project executive “The completion of the project not only enhanced the space and functionality of the ED, but also greatly improved patient care and satisfaction.”

Now that this work is complete, Cape Cod Healthcare has turned its attention to the construction of two new urgent care centers. Conveniently located near Cape Cod and Falmouth Hospitals, these facilities will complement urgent care offerings previously completed in Sandwich and Harwich, Mass. Once again, Cape Cod Healthcare chose Dellbrook | JK Scanlan to spearhead the effort.

According to Tom Shevory, Dellbrook | JK Scanlon project manager, “Safety was paramount in every aspect of our construction work.  Before we even broke ground, we presented the hospital administration with a logistics plan, phasing plan, and life safety plan. Once we launched into construction, we worked hand-in-hand with the local fire department; ensured that all bulldozing, excavation, and delivery of materials did not hinder EMT access in any way; and took great care to minimize noise levels in a sensitive healthcare setting. Our goal was to keep the front door open and ensure the utmost in patient safety, all while hitting aggressive timelines—and we succeeded on every level.”
