Andover, MA Erland Construction was awarded The Andover Companies Wellness Center, a 13,300 s/f high-end fitness center being constructed as an addition to the insurance company’s headquarters originally built by Erland in 1989. Designed to enhance the quality of work life for employees, the Wellness Center includes both fitness and flexible studio/conference space.
Prellwitz / Chilinski Associates was selected as the architect on this design/build project.
The Wellness Center, linked to the main building via a connector, will feature granite, brick, and limestone exterior finishes to reflect the headquarters building. The new ground-up structure ties into several of the existing building’s utilities -- including electrical, fire protection, and water -- but will have a completely independent mechanical system.
It will house a fitness center, spin studio, flexible collaborative space with an operable partition system, one-on-one rooms for training sessions, a kitchen, and fully-appointed locker/shower rooms with a radiant heat flooring system. Key design elements include a high-end finish package throughout with an elaborate coffered ceiling and extensive tile work in the locker rooms.
The project began with construction of an outdoor basketball court for employees to enjoy immediately.
The site of the new Wellness Center is in a Protected Species Zone -- habitat for bald eagles and dragonflies. Erland’s project team went through a rigorous permitting process with the National Wildlife Services, as well as with the Andover Planning Board for a special permit required for the size and use of the new building.
