How the construction industry is responding to COVID-19 - Mike O'Brien

Mike O’Brien
V.P., MA Business Unit Leader
Gilbane Building Co.

What is the most important thing that your industry or your company is doing to help clients right now?  As one of the nation’s largest construction management firms, Gilbane is positioned to service healthcare clients and government agencies throughout the country, providing construction management services to build Alternate Care Facilities (ACF) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To date, Gilbane has been selected to construct six ACFs across the country, including one for a state agency in the Boston area.

This newly completed project involved the temporary re-occupancy of a shuttered healthcare facility, reinstating 270 patient beds for surge capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the existing 400,000 s/f, eight-story building, approximately 168,556 s/f will be operational for quarantine or isolation patient care.

The project included reactivation and/or upgrade to building systems including life safety, HVAC, fire protection, plumbing, fire protection, medical gasses, electrical and architectural upgrades.

This fast-tracked project started construction on March 30th and was complete on April 9th, one day ahead of the projected schedule.

In addition, Gilbane has donated 500 safety glasses to each of the following entities:

• Massachusetts General Hospital;

• Dana Farber Cancer Institute;

• Care New England hospitals; and

• The city of Worcester.

Gilbane’s Polar Park MLB project joint venture team (Gilbane/Hunt) has pledged face masks to be donated to local Worcester hospitals.
