J.K. Scanlan Co. awarded $13m Mass. State House roof repair
J.K. Scanlan Company, Inc. has been awarded the contract for construction management services for the roof repair project at the Mass. State House.
According to the Division of Capital Asset Management's (DCAM) records the problems with the roof continue to cause damage inside the building and leaking has become a serious concern.
The Mass. State House which is situated on 6.7 acres on top of Beacon Hill consists of the original Bulfinch Building constructed in 1798, the Brigham Annex constructed in 1895 and the east and west wings, both completed in 1917. The State House is a complex structure with a roof that has numerous different plans, structures and other features that make for a very complex and challenging roof replacement project.
The project's primary focus is on the removal and replacement of the existing 75,000 s/f flat seamed sloped copper roofing system on the Brigham Annex which was originally covered in copper by Paul Revere's company in 1802. The Brigham Annex roof work also involves the removal and replacement of areas of membrane roofing located around mechanical equipment and skylights, the upgrading of the State House roof drainage system and the replacement and repairs of the skylights. Additional areas of roof replacement are the low sloped membrane terraces on the East and West Wings and front elevated portico on the Bulfinch Building. The repair project which will be done in two phases will take two years to complete and is scheduled to begin in April.
The cost for this project is estimated to be $13 million.
In addition to historic renovations and restoration work, J.K. Scanlan Co. also has divisions in healthcare, general construction, residential sound insulation programs, and the newly developed JKS Wind, LLC, a division that designs and constructs wind turbines.
J.K. Scanlan Co. currently employs over 60 employees, and is headquartered in Falmouth, Mass.
