JM Coull Inc. wins 4 Excellence in Construction, Green Building awards: Projects for Beckman Coulter, F.W. Webb and New Balance

JM Coull, Inc., won four Excellence in Construction Awards at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Massachusetts annual awards banquet. The event was part of the Architecture Boston Expo, held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Three JM Coull projects earned recognition, including a new genomic sequencing facility for Beckman Coulter Genomics in Danvers, Mass., a sprinkler system and boiler replacement for New Balance in Lawrence, Mass., and a new store and showroom for F.W. Webb Company in Boston. All of the projects were recognized for excellence in construction; the F.W. Webb project also won a Green Award for sustainability. The Beckman Coulter facility expanded the company's laboratory and production capability and includes four BL2 labs with dedicated HVAC, 10 specialty labs and a 1,200 s/f data server room with specialty HVAC and fire suppression system redundancy. The 20,000 s/f dedicated lab production space incorporates a one-megawatt Diesel Standby Generator, and a 225 kw UPS battery backup system. JM Coull was recognized for delivering a quality project while developing a layered work plan to satisfy the owner's request to accelerate an already aggressive schedule. The design-build team included project architect Industrial Facility Design, Inc. Building owner Brookwood Management Partners, L.P., was also instrumental in orchestrating a coordinated effort. The award for the New Balance project recognized the design-build team's ability to achieve a successful project in the face of numerous extenuating circumstances. The headquarters and manufacturing plant of the maker of athletic shoes and apparel is in a 1909 former mill building. Replacing major building systems in the structure required a high level of knowledge and problem-solving skills. This was true not only because of the age of the building and the unforeseen conditions encountered, but also because of the logistical challenges imposed by the owner's need to maintain its normal operations throughout the project. The JMC team included project architect J. Ferrera & Associates. F.W. Webb's new store, showroom and distribution center was the focus of two awards, one for excellence in construction and one for sustainable design and construction. The building was built on Dorchester Ave. in Boston to accommodate the expanded operations of the plumbing and HVAC supply company. It features a closed-loop, hybrid, solar/geothermal system for heating and cooling the facility using energy from the sun and the relatively constant temperatures of the earth. Accepting the awards on behalf of the project teams were: Beckman Coulter Genomic Sequencing Facility: Christopher Oldham, JM Coull; Rob Troccolo, IFDI; Beth Sarni, Brookwood Financial Partners; Joe Marciano, Brookwood Financial Partners; James Fabbri, JM Coull; Joshua Deming, JM Coull. New Balance Sprinkler System and Boiler Replacement: John Araujo, New Balance; Daniel Cobb, JM Coull; Jay Ferrera, J. Ferrera Associates; John Campbell, New Balance; Thomas Dube, JM Coull F.W . Webb Plumbing and HVAC Supply Center: Andrew Loverud, Design Science Int'l; Tom Blades, FW Webb Co.; Andrew McBeth, JM Coull. JM Coull is a design-build and construction management firm specializing in new construction and renovations for industrial and institutional markets. The firm is a longtime member of the Associated Builders and Contractors and is endorsed by the organization as an Accredited Quality Contractor and Certified Green Building Contractor.
