Suffolk Construction to manage construction of $250m ConRAC project at Logan Airport

September 15, 2010 - Construction Design & Engineering

Suffolk Construction Company was recently awarded a significant construction project at Logan International Airport—the Consolidated Rental Car Facility and Southwest Service Area, or ConRAC. The ConRAC project will incorporate sustainable design elements with the goal of achieving a LEED Silver rating and recognition from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts "LEED Plus" program. The value of this project is estimated at $250 million.
The ConRAC project will include new construction of a four-level, 1.2 million s/f precast parking garage that will consolidate rental car facilities, and combine the existing car rental shuttle buses into a shared common bus system with Massport buses. The project will consist of a reconfigured taxi pool, roadway and intersection improvements, site access improvements, and landscaping. Suffolk's project teams will also manage construction of a new 112,000 s/f Customer Service Center building, and maintenance and storage areas for the airport's rental car operations.
The ConRAC project will be complicated because demolition and new construction will occur adjacent to operational areas within Logan International Airport. To accommodate the new facilities, the Suffolk project team will manage the demolition of the existing flight kitchen and temporarily relocate the bus/limousine pool and taxi pool to another area of the airport.
The project team included: architect, Pierce Goodwin Alexander & Linville; landscape engineer, Brown Richardson & Rowe; and consultant, Parsons Brinckerhoff.
Construction is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2013.
